the 'Rock House"
Posted: Oct 27, 2010 05:43 PM

Many years ago, while speaking with a Cherokee friend of mine, I was informed of a sacred site in Otto called the Rock House. I was told Franklin was the center of the Cherokee Nation before the whites took their land. The Rock House was a place the Shaman would go to at certain times of the year for spiritual ceremonies. I've been there now many times and it never disappoints. I always leave feeling more in tune with my self and my surroundings. I have brought several folks to the area and they have all had neat things happen while there. With one exception and this is no lie. I gave directions to a hiker in the store, he came back the next day, disappointed that he couldn't find it. So I tried again to carefully explain the way. He again returned the next morning with his parka in his hand, only it looked trashed! He was hit by lightning while working his way around the granite wall. His jacket was burnt and split down the back. Crazy, but I told him maybe he wasn't ready to find it just yet! Anyway, the place is beautiful and well worth the effort to find. Maybe hold off on a day that looks a bit ominous! Take 441 south from Franklin, turn right onto Coweeta lab rd. follow to end at Lab and stay left at fork in front of lab. This is a gravel rd, go approx 1 mile and turn left on FS421, road forks, stay left. you will descend down with a guard rail on left, as it bottoms out the rd turns left. There is a old logging rd on right that will allow a place to park. There is a not so used path on this south side of the rd, it starts on the sw side of the small mtn you are parked facing. Basically you want to stay on the right side of this mountain and work your way around the back side. Once you start seeing a wall of rock on your left nearly verticle you are on your way. hug this wall and keep working around until you come to a huge rock that has fallen away from the wall, behind this is the rock house. There will be a huge fire pit, water, char marks on the walls from ancient fires. It can be snakey so use caution. The area all out in front (south) is full of boulders and caves. Enjoy and soak up the power!
