The AT deep RPC meeting by Becky Allen

On October 2nd I attended the Appalachain Trail's Deep South RPC meeting, representing Three Eagles Outfitters. This Fall it was held in our home town of Franklin, NC. Franklin officially became designated an "AT Trail Town" this year. Each region of the AT is made up of several hiking clubs. The Deep South has six, including our own local Nantahal Hiking Club. Some cool and interesting facts I learned- Our region contains more AT communities and more thru-hikers than any other, and partners with the most popular National Park in the country, The Great Smoky Mountains.
My friend and past president of the NHC, Bill VanHorn, was aslo in attendance at the meeting. During the lunch break he recognized some of Franklin's community members who have proven to be outstanding partners of the AT. The Macon County Library, which hosted the meeting, was recognized with Honorary Merchant Membership. Goshen Timber Frames is providing logs for a new shelter and Bill presented them with blueprints for the new "Big Spring" structure.
The main focus of NHC for the upcoming year is to attract more members and volunteers. It is obvious we are very lucky as a community to dwell among the pristine Appalachain Mountains and maintaining the beauty of the trail is a must. Anyone interested in volunteering with the club for shelter upkeep, trail maintenance, etc, or seeking advice for a great day hike(or more!) can contact Three Eagles Outfitters at (828) 524-9061.
